What are the best tomato plants to grow and which ones product large ripe tomatoes? Tomatoes come in all different shapes and sizes so a little research will help a grower find the best tomatoes for their needs.

But once you start enquiring as to what the tomato plants to grow you will be amazed that tomatoes come in all shapes and sizes and in all different colors.

Now don't laugh at me, but I have actually seen a square tomato on a TV documentary! One grower who obviously thinks outside the square (Huh) was putting a square box around his tomatoes so that as they grew they shaped themselves into a square shape. He believed there would be a market for square tomatoes in the restaurant industry. He would well be right at that!

Some Of The Popular Tomato Varieties.

Most very big tomatoes grow on indeterminate tomato vines, in other words the taller tomato plants and they are staked to stand straight. These plants can grow as high as 8 - 10 feet although they are often kept within a good picking height. They can be planted in the ground or in pots, but when grown in pots the pot itself has to be very big because they will have a large root system and they will also be drawing nutrients from a large area. Some tomato gardeners will even use plastic garbage tins for these large types of tomatoes.

Large and Super Sized Tomato Varieties.

Some of the popular ones are Beefsteak, Big Beef, Big Boy and Supersonic. In the super size there is Dixie Golden Giant heirloom Tomato, Giant Oxheart Heirloom tomato, Dinner Plate Heirloom tomato and Ultimate Giant Heirloom tomato which can grow up to an amazing 9 inches across!

Many of the larger tomatoes are quite fleshy and these tomatoes are very popular for using in relishes and chutneys. Of course, larger varieties are also grown by home gardeners who want to enter into competitions for the largest tomato grown in the area.

There are other tomato types too such as determinate and semi-determinate which are smaller plants and they do grow large tomatoes as well, but of the huge tomatoes grow on the indeterminate type of plant.

It stands to reason that a tomato plant producing very large fruit does need a very good fertilizing system to achieve the great results of large and super sized tomatoes.
